Real Madrid's Sergio Canales ruled out for three weeks
Today it was confirmed that Real Madrid midfielder Sergio Canales has been ruled out of action for three weeks following an ankle injury.
According to Spanish daily newspaper Marca, the 19-year-old suffered a sprain in a training session yesterday. The injury was caused without any contact with another player; it occurred while he was turning while trying to control the ball on his
chest.
The former Racing Club Santander playmaker underwent medical tests today, and it was confirmed that he will be out of action for about two to three weeks.
A statement released on the club’s official website today said that, "A physical examination and MRI performed on Real Madrid C.F.'s Sergio Canales at Sanitas La Moraleja Hospital has revealed that the player has a Grade II right ankle sprain with inflammation
of the anterior talofibular ligament, which will keep him sidelined for approximately three weeks, pending progress."
The news means that Spain's Under-21 international Canales — who joined Madrid in July for a fee believed to be around 4.5 million Euros — is likely to miss the upcoming league matches against RCD Espanyol, Levante and Deportivo de La Coruna, as well as
the UEFA Champions League clash with French Ligue 1 outfit Auxerre on September 28.
Canales’ injury also means that Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has few options to choose from in the attacking midfield position as Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite (‘Kaka’) is also out of action for at least another six weeks, following surgery on a long-standing
knee injury in the summer. It is likely that Mourinho will rely on Mesut Ozil — who arrived from Werder Bremen over the summer and has impressed in the club’s last few outings —to occupy the berth for the next few games.
