Real Madrid’s biggest mistakes in the transfer market last season
Real Madrid had one of their better seasons last term, in regard to chasing their rivals Barcelona. The race for the title was on till the last few matches, but Madrid ultimately lost out to Barcelona in the end.
The main source of the problem seems to be the poor allocation of money for transfers that was made by the club. The former Real Madrid coach Pellegrini is quoted to have said, “It's no good having an orchestra with the 10 best guitarists if I don't have a pianist - Real Madrid have the best guitarists, but if I ask them to play the piano they won't be able to do it so well.” Here is a look at some of the poor decisions made by the club over the last transfer window.
The term Galacticos is closely used to refer to the type of players that Madrid likes to hire to play amongst their ranks. They mainly focus on signing players at times solely for their marketing purposes and not for their play ability or form.
This is why it was no surprise to anyone when Real decided to jump in and sign the French goal scoring sensation, Karim Benzema. He had a terrific run in with Lyon and it wasn’t long before Madrid made an offer that was just too good for the team to refuse. Benzema was bought by Madrid for around thirty five million Euros.
Soon after however, Ronaldo was also bought by the club and this left very little or no room for Benzema to play in. After a couple of poor starts, Benzema was dropped to the bench and failed to make an impact at all. He even fell behind Raul in the picking order at the team.
When Pepe managed to get himself injured, Ramos was forced to play as a make shift centre back, even though he did a decent job, Madrid should have looked for a potential replacement for the central defender. Instead of doing this however, they bought another side back in the form of Raul Albiol.
There was already no need for Albiol in the squad and his inclusion was quite unnecessary. The team suffered a lot due to this terribly decision since Ramos couldn’t play in his natural right back position and hence the team didn’t perform to its maximum potential.
The most unnecessay act however, was the sale of both the Dutch superstars, Robben and Sneijder. Robben was sold because apparently he was had been injured too many times and didn’t contribute much to the side, even though he was supposed to.
Sneijder on the other hand had no spot to play in after Kaka, Ronaldo and Alonso were brought it. So Madrid sold both the players, but they are probably crying over that mistake now.
Robben has been in phenomenal form at Bayern and is performing better than any winger at Madrid, Sneijder on the other hand has reached the peak of his form and is now one of the best talents in the world.
