Real Madrid’s biggest signings this past decade
Real Madrid are quite easily the most successful club of the twentieth century, in fact the team has been performing so well, that they were officially awarded the best club of the twentieth century award by FIFA.
Real Madrid have pretty much won it all, ever since the club was formed, they have countless league titles, Champions League cups and even countless League cups. However what really sets Madrid apart from the rest, is the team’s ability to grab hold of the
biggest talents in the world of football.
Here is a look at some of the biggest signing’s that the club had made this past decade. The players included on the list aren’t necessarily the best players to ever play for Madrid, but they are easily the biggest signings in the clubs History.
Luis Figo
One of the most controversial transfers to ever take place in the history of Real Madrid, was that of Luis Figo in 2000. Prior to joining Madrid Figo was a member of the Barcelona squad, Barcelona also just so happen to be the biggest rivals that Madrid
have. In fact the rivalry between the two teams is such, that they consider each other to be their mortal enemies.
None the less Figo still decided to jump the ship and join Madrid, despite the fact that it was his time at Barcelona that saw him reach super star status globally. When he did finally make the switch, almost everyone considered him to be nothing more than
a money hungry scum. It was widely believed that the only reason Figo made the move was due to the fact that he was being offered a significant more amount of money at Madrid.
Figo’s career at Madrid however despite this fact, was a rather good one. He went on to win the La Liga twice with the team and even went on to life the Champions League trophy with the side in the 2001 – 2002 season.
Nonetheless, the time that Figo spent with Madrid was nothing but exciting and that was not only due to his brilliant displays on the pitch. The player somehow managed to bring out the worst in the Barcelona fans. When Figo did finally make a return to the
Camp Nou after making the switch, he was received by the crowd with nothing more than a lot of hand gestures and some rather bitter words. The matches that he played was barred with constant crowd violence and the security having to be at their best to avoid
the fans from getting too close to Figo.
Every time the player went on to take a corner he had to be offered extra protection by the ground security so that foreign objects weren’t thrown at him. Some people might ask what was the worst that the fan’s could throw at the player, those people would
be surprised to find out that on that very night, the list of things that were hurled at the player included a whole pigs head.
It is all of this controversy that makes this move, one of the biggest in the world.
