Real estate tycoon Donald Trump to build the greatest golf course in the world
Donald trump, the real estate tycoon, has now set his eye on building the greatest golf course that has ever existed along the Scottish coastline. The $1 billion project will be one of the major investments in Scotland by the Trump and Co. and would go a
long way in creating a world-class golf range for the country. Trump, terms the initiative as ‘the greatest golf course in the world.’
The golf course will be located at the eastern coast line of Aberdeen and will be one of the ‘Links’ style course much like the St. Andrews, just 80 miles away. St Andrews is the oldest course in the world and is also regarded as the birthplace of the sport.
The course will feature lofty greens meandering through rugged sand dunes and water hazards. The design is a 72 par, 7,400 yards course lined with bottle brushes and seasonal grasses which change colours throughout the year.
The British Open, which is always played on the Links courses, will be something Trump would be hoping to organise on this course. The eastern coast is notorious for whipping winds that blow off the Atlantic, rendering the approach shots. “It has the perfect
location,” said Trump, “Fronting for three miles on the North Sea, acres of sand dunes of immense proportions, and with 1,400 acres of unspoiled land, it all adds up to being spectacular.”
Trump also added that he attributes his decision of investing in Scotland much because of his mother, Mary Macleod Trump, who was born in the Isle of Lewis, on the west coast of Scotland. “This has been a labor of love for me,” said Trump.
The project, like the rest of the projects of Trump, has not gone without controversies clinging to it. Two of the land owners in the designated area, are not ready to part ways with their land. One of the opponents, Michael Forbes, who works as a fisherman
and a quarry worker, has been the most vocal of his views against Trump’s proposed plan.
He went all the way to set up a group, ‘Tripping the Trump’ and has also reportedly sold chunks of his land to likeminded fellows to avoid seizure by authorities. “Trump lost the battle for public opinion long ago,” Forbes told a British daily, “and he's
now lost any chance of bulldozing our homes.”
When asked about the resistance, Trump shrugged the idea and said that the controversial pieces of land have been removed from the blue print and that the ground breaking had already taken place. Trump said, “There are no negatives. Sir Sean Connery came
out in support of the development and we're moving ahead rapidly.” He added that the work on the course design had been going on for the last four years and the course would be ready by 2012.
The project will also include a five star 450-room hotel, a residential block of 950 condominiums, 500 single-family homes, a practice facility and 36 multipurpose villas. Most part of the local Aberdeenian community has supported the idea which is poised
to generate revenue for the community and also much relished jobs.
Although nothing compares to the historic importance of the St Andrews course, but Trump proudly calls his creation as the best the sport has ever seen, “Trump International Golf Links Scotland will be a destination for golfers from all around the world,”
he said. “It will be incomparable.”
The course design has been allocated to Dr Hawtree, the famous architect who designed the Royal Birkdale, the Sunning dale in England, Portmarnock in Ireland and Tarandowah Golf Club in Canada.
