Question:

Realistically, how likely is it someone would break into my apartment and is this a good way to stop it?

Okay, I live in a second floor apartment. My apartment is on top of a garage/workshop. It's in an area right outside of a city where it seems violence is increasing (shootings, robberies, home invasions). But the city is right across the bridge. My neighborhood is mostly old people and poor girls with lots of kids. Whats a statistic about the probability of something like that happening to me?

Also, there's only one way in and out of my apartment. Through the front door and immediately up the steps. at the top of the steps is a small landing. On the landing there is a railing. Now, if someone did break into my apartment, I already have a plan. I figure that I would have the advantage, because I'm above who ever is breaking in, and I plan to hit him with a bat from up above, and possibly throw my stuff down the steps at him if I can manage to knock him to the bottom by hitting him with the bat. In this landing I keep a pretty big stroller and my vacuum there. Does this sound like a good idea that would probably work?

I know it's a little extreme and no one is probably going to break into my apartment, but it happens to people and just incase, I want to have a plan.

  1. The thing is that you are fighting back. You do live in the kind of neighborhood that troublemakers like, so it's a good idea to have something handy to bash with.

If you're concerned, add deadbolts to your door and put a locking device on your window that can't be opened from the outside.

    Good luck.
