Reality shows like laguna beach and baldwin hills?

How did they decide to film them? I mean how did they know all about there drama and decide to make there personal lives a hit reality show?

And about how long does it take to make one season? Because we see about 7 shows a season but I know they dont shoot every week back to back. Example: On "The-N Student body" there is 3 weeks between each episode.
