    Trade opportunities.

    Source of raw materials for manufacture.

    Extend military influence there before another nation did so.

    Large Navy available to protect trade links.

    Scientific research.

  3. I don't know about six reasons, but the main one was because they had too many prisoners, mostly for petty crimes.

    The prisons and hulks were overflowing, so they decided to transport them to Oz, usually for seven years.

    A good way to populate the newly acquired land before someone else did.
