Question:

Really Irish St. Patricks Day foods?

For the last few years, I have been making poached salmon with irish butter sauce. Does anyone have any other recipes for truly Irish fish dishes that I can use for St. Patricks Day. My family and I don't eat any meats other than fish or shellfish, and my husband's ancestry is Irish, but all of his older family members have passed on. I try to keep to traditional foods. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  1. This is my favorite Irish recipe!  It takes time to prepare, but is very much worth it!  You can use leftover mashed potatoes and leftover cooked fish too, to make it easier.

    Irish Fish Pie

    Preparation time: 40 minutes

    Total cooking time: 45 minutes

    Serves 4-6

1 1/2 lb boneless firm white fish

1 large leek, chopped                            1 medium leek, extra,

2 strips lemon rind                                        finely sliced

1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg                           2 Tbsp. flour

    8 peppercorns                                         2 Tbsp. chopped

    2 bay leaves                                                   parsley

6 stalks parsley                                        2 lb. potatoes, peeled

2 1/2 cups milk,                                              and chopped

plus some extra milk                              2 Tbsp. milk

1 oz. butter                                                  salt and pepper

    1.  Place fish fillets, leek, lemon rind, nutmeg, peppercorns, bay leaves and parsley in a pan.  (I use a large frying pan)  Add 2 1/2 cups milk and heat until simmering.  Simmer, uncovered, over low heat for 15 minutes or until the fish is cooked.  Carefully removed the fish from the pan.  Strain the liquid and reserve for sauce, throwing away peppercorns, rind and leaves.

    2.  Melt butter in a saucepan and add the extra leek.  Cook over low heat for 10 minutes or until the leeks are very soft.  Sprinkle flour over the remaining mix in pan.  Stir for 1 minute.  Measure reserved fish poaching milk and add extra milk, if necessary, to measure 1 1/2 cups altogether.  Add gradually to the pan and stir until the mixture comes to a boil and thickens.  Cook for another minute.

    3.  Cut the fish into chunky pieces and fold gently through the sauce with the parsley.  Make mashed potatoes with the potatoes, milk and salt and pepper.

    4.  Preheat oven to 415 degrees F.  Grease a 6-cup casserole dish and pour in the fish mixture.  Top with mashed potatoes and use a fork to rough up the surface.  Bake for 20 minutes or until the potato topping is golden.  Enjoy!

  2. I'd recommend Beer (Guiness) battered cod with baked home fries since you seem to be health conscious.

  3. Hi, Here are a couple of links for Irish cooking.  Many are for meat, but if you look thru the cheese categories you will find meatless recipes.  There is one with a shrimp omelet.  Hope this helps.  Erin Go Braugh!!!!!
