Really Old Telephone Wiring ?

On the my side of the NID (Network Interface Device) I have very old telephone wiring from 48 years ago. There are about 3 or four separate wires that are taped together they have no outer jacket like the newer wires. Should I bother to replace telephone wires? If I do will it improve my DSL Speeds? Thanks for your help.

  1. Both answers are good, I don'tknow wires so I don't know the difference.

Why the competitionition?  I got it with a question of mine a while back.

One answer told me all I needed to know and the others come in and say the exact same only gives me stuff confuseing  me and third trying to out answer the first 2.

  2. yes, much older than 48 years, probably 18 gauge too. Today, it is 20 or 22 ga. It might even be "pulp cable" where the insulation around the wire was wood pulp/paper instead of PVC.

run your speed tests, if they do not produce the desired effects, pull in one run from the demarc to your xDSL modem.

if you were really energetic, you could pull all that old, heavy copper, and pull in newer lightweight copper and scrap out the heavy stuff. This is called "copper mining" in the phone biz, and all of the telco's are doing it. Mining copper and replacing with glass (fiber optics).

  3. The old twisted line, it is 3 wires. Older than 48 years.

Actually do a speed test, if you are getting the dsl speed you pay for I wouldn't bother.  example:  If your dsl is 1.5 mps and your speed test comes back say from 1.1 ~ 1.3 I wouldn't bother.

    Personal choice,
