Question:

Really bad hamster bite ;[

Well I was feeding my brother's hamster since he's too scared to feed it himself. [She doesn't usually bite, but he's been scared of feeding the hamster once she accidentally bit him.] Well this hamster bit my finger, and hung on. I grabbed it with one hand until she let go and put her back in her cage. The bite looked bad, I was bleeding heavily and I ran to the sink and began running it with cold water and bandaged it. It's been two hours and I am typing without an index finger at midnight. I just checked the bite and it is still bleeding, but very little.

However I am still concerned because it has stayed numb ever since I was bitten.

So the question is, should I be concerned? If so, what should I do? ;x

Thanks.

  1. no, put a hydroxid on it, and put a bandaid on it, that is normal

  2. I have been bitten by hamsters before and nothing has ever happened. The bites never even got a slight infection or anything. I am assuming that your figure is numb since the hamster held on to you. Ouch! Keep it clean and covered and keep an eye on it for the next couple of days. If it still feels numb tomorrow, you may want to call a doctor, but it really shouldn't be numb after the amount of time.

To avoid this problem in the future, be sure not to wake a sleeping hamster (that will make them more prone to bite) If your hamster is just a biter, you may want to put a q tip in his/her cage and gently rub your hamster to make sure it is completely aware that you are going to be coming into its cage for something. After a minute of q tip petting, try putting you hand in and just leaving it there. See if your hamster approaches you. If he/she does then you can pet it on its back. Avoid coming directly from the front of your hamster quickly.

    good luck!!

Oh, also, if your hamster is at the age of sexual maturity (which varies depending on the breed of hamster you have, but can be anywhere from 4-12 weeks) then it is not uncommon for your hamster to be a little bit more 'nippy' than normal. Don't be discouraged. You hamster will most likely get used to your presence and stop biting. (Make sure you pass this along to your brother also so he can stop being afraid)

  3. If it get worse go and see a doctor but a doctor for animals. your regular doctor will just give you pain killers. Hope you fell better.

  4. if its still bad, go to the doctor it probably hit a nerve!

  5. well first you guys should play with er more she wouldn't bite as much then put some Neosporin on it and if it is still bad go to the doctor

  6. Put Neosporin or some other antibiotic on it. If it still stays numb for after 1 hour go to the doctor.

  7. you're so going to be fine, that was a defensive bite and it was afraid and attacked.  I've been through that tons..especially when I broke up fights lol.  Just keep the wound clean and you'll be good.

next time, make sure you don't smell like food...don't bother the hamster at all, just put the food in and leave, it seems the hamster is not tame yet.

  8. i have an evil nasty hamster too.

it might of just hit a nerve .

i get bit all the time.

but i have gotten used to it.

  9. Hey hun, don't worry about it to bad. My Hamster Hammy bit me last week and it still has a mark. They have sharp little teeth and sometimes it bleeds a lot. Put some antibiotic ointment on it and just keep a bandaid on it. It will heal. You might want to give her some chew sticks to help file them down a bit. Hamsters teeth never stop growing and before you know it they have fangs. I still got a scar from a hamster bite. But if it does not get better or gets worse go to the doctors because hamsters are known to carry some diseases and also they don't brush their teeth so it could get a bad infection.

    Good Luck!

  10. Wipe the bleeding with a cotton swab dipped in antiseptic and dab some antibiotic over it and bandage it. It should heal in a couple of hours. The bite must have been a bit deep and hence the bleeding. If you are concerned that the hamster might be passing on some disease to you, don't be. Tamed hamsters cannot pass on any disease through a bite.

  11. the same exact thing happened to me with my mouse. cause i had my other mouses scent on me and the one that bit me just had babies.

anyways, dont worry about it. just put some hydrogen peroxide on it and hopefully that'll keep it clean and it will heal.

  12. This happened to me once and all you can do is let it take it's course.  But you have to clean it out to avoid infection, which hamster bites can give you.  Just use some rubbing alcohol and neosporin and change the bandaid every day.
