my favorites that i read are +anima, bleach, rosario+vampire, deathnote, and fate stay night (though fate stay night won't be out in english until october). they are all amazing series!!!

Bleach - Action and humor,

Death Note - So wonderfully clever and some very funny bits,

Battle Royale - Gruesome, fast-paced and gripping,

Black Cat - More action, again some humor,

I've heard good things about Fruits Basket, but shojo manga doesn't really appeal to me...

I would try the series by Shonen Jump.They have some really good manga!And Viz Media!

I'm not particularly into manga myself, but a lot of my friends have been reading and talking about Negima for the past year or so.

According to them, it has everything you would want in a manga. I can't say anything about the series on my behalf, but you should go check it out.
