Rear Main seal on a 1995 ford ranger?

How much can I expect to spend on this repair, very serious leak and is there anything else that will " look " like a rear main seal. I had a small leak added about a quart a month...noticed small drops on the gaurage floor. I went on a trip today about 550 miles...noticed the gauge was fluttering and stopped to check the oil, it was reading lower than the fill mark. I noticed a worse leak dripping slowly, anyway it took 4 quarts to get back home. Any experience changing these and how much for cost and time as i am supposed to be leaving for college in a week. thanks

  1. if its a rear main seal in it your looking at taking the transmission out to replace it because those are one piece seals labor is about 350 bucks and then the seal cost around 30 total labor and parts would be well over 400 bucks to get that one repaired if its a main seal, and that's what it sounds like, with it leaking that much oil, in that short of a trip, good luck.

  2. Take it to a transmission shop after you shop around for a good price. The seal is all you have to buy, they will remove the transmission and replace the old seal, then reinstall the trannie. I paid $248 to have mine done a few months ago, but really had to shop around for that price. Good luck!

  3. I agree with Dodge man it is an extensive repair and costly. clean off the engine. then start it up. look for oil comming from the bottom rear of the engine. if it is leaking there then yes it is a rear main seal.

  4. this is a very expensive repair, the engine has to be separated from the transmission to repair this.

not to mention the oil pan needs to be dropped for this particular model.

  5. Ford uses oil pan gaskets, blue silicone, that'll get mushie with age.  Shampoo the engine & see if it's mooshed out. Most of the time you can find a 4 piece pan gasket that's pretty  EZ to put in yerself. Just clean the surfaces well.
