Mechanic said that my calipers were frozen, that the brakes needed bleed, rotors, pads and I was charged $647.00, that seems a bit high, am I correct in questioning this price.

  1. maybe ... you call auto part store ask price of parts you call shop ask how much labor will be... and you could have done the job at home for half the price.. brakes are easy once you know how... most every cars brakes work the same way so knowing how one works you can pretty much do them all.. my wife does her own brake as i do at home... call ask parts store how much the parts are to replace  calipers brake pads and rotors... then call a few shops and ask about the same job... but really if you have already had the work done theres little you can do but learn from your mistakes.... knowing how to make simple repairs wil save you hundreds of dollars...thro it was a high price you payed for them doing it .. not knowing what type of car... calipers do stick but hardly ever both at same time and when they do you stop moving,,,, pads wear 10 to 50,000 miles depending on driver and kind of pads... rotors wear about every four or five brake pads if you drive with bad pads you get bad rotors costing you money if a caliper sticks it almost always is just one so im thinking you got taken in a way kind of.. but for price to replace all that sounds about right for a few places...sorry

  2. What kind of car? Also, what about the labor. Most places charge at least $50 an hour for labor.

  3. First of all, you need to tell us WHICH CAR you're talking about and WHERE YOU LIVE!

Where I live the price you listed is low (DC suburbs, Volvo shop).

Rear brake pads and rotors alone would run $600 including labor, and calipers $150-$200 EACH plus labor.

I think you got away cheap....

  4. Ask for the old parts. You're dealing with a salesman calling himself a mechanic! The odds that all of these items were bad are extremely low!

  5. When shops do brakes, labor is a big part of the charge.  New rotors should be like 60$ a piece, and pads probably like 80$ for some decent ones.  I don't remember how much my calipers were, but they should be under 50$ depending on what you drive.

That's about what the prices are for a truck.  If your vehicle is a smaller car, these brake parts should be cheaper

  6. that's in the ball park
