  1. I'll try to explain this to you by imagining a situation.

Say the US and Canada are one federal country, call it America.

The president of America, for unknown reasons decides to reorganize the federal borders. He decides to push the borders of British Columbia to the south, making the state of Washington a part of BC.

Years after this, after the death of the leader America collapses and 2 countries merge : the USA and Canada. The US has a real problem, their ppl from Washington are in Canada (BC). The americans in the Washington state are refusing the rule of a tyrant from Canada. Canada responds by force and starts the bloodshed. American forces enter Washington, which is internationally Canadian but the ppl in it are all American.

Now, let's bring it to the Russa- Georgia situation. Russia in this case is America, Georgia is Canada. Ossetia is the State of Washington, the tyrannic canadian leader is the president of Georgia and the dead president of ex-America is Stalin.

I hope this makes sense to you.

  2. Russia didn't invade Georgia.

Russia was in South Osetia just as peace keepers and trying to get refugees out of the S.Osetia because Georgia was bombing the place. And then the peacekeepers from the Georgia side who were supposed to be there to work with the Russians to maintain the peace opened fire on the Russians killing 12 and wounding 50. Georgia already killed over 1500 people in S.Osetia most of whom are civilians.

Russia will not let its citizens be killed without doing anything, considering the fact that most people in S.Osetia are Russian citizens.

  3. None of the answers above were right.

Georgia is a sovereign country with multiople regions. After Soviet union invaded Georgia, it gave some of Georgian regions autonomy within Georgia. After Soviet union collapsed, these regions decided they wanted to join Russia (However ridiculous it may sound a province of one country to join another) and started separatist movements which reslted in conflicts in 1993.

What's Russia's interest in this you say? By having controll over 2 regions in Georgia, Russia has buttons to push in georgia and destabilize it whenever it wishes. Russian government issued russian passports in these regions (Which can not be done under international law) and declared these sepparatist governments and their people as russian citizens to have something to say in case they invaded Georgia.

Now, these two regions have been in a frozen conflict state since 1993, and Georgia's multiple attempts to solve the conflicts with peacefull means have not been accepted by the sepparatists, cos they are controlled by Russia.

Recently, Georgia has shown great determination in joining NATO alliance, which Russia is very agressively oposing and  russians say "We will do anything to prevent Georgia join Nato" which they are successfully able to do by distabilizing situation in those conflict zones.

As for recent events: South Osetia( separatist provicne of Georgia) has started bombing and shelling Georgian controlled territories and civilian citi/villages. Georgia demanded that separatists seased fire and did not return fire for a week. After multiple civilians were injured in georgia by south osetian bombings and south ossetians announced they would attack Georgian peackeeping units and villages Georgia had to respond with a military action to dimilitarize it's uncontrolled region and regain controll. georgia was successful in forcing separatist terrorist gangs out of the villages and the city "Tskhinvali" These militants had to flee to Russian border.

Meanwhile: Russia decided to punish Georgia for policing Georgias own territory by coming uo with different reasons to invade... Hundreds of Tanks and heavy artillery has been moved into georgia by Russia alog with multiple thousands of boevk fighters who will try to destroy and immobilize Georgia as country. Russian airforce is bombing Georgian cities, villages, ports, railway, civilians, food supplies and everyhting they can bomb.

You must realize here, that while Georgia has all rights to police it's territory, Russia has no right to invade a sovereign country. Meanwhile EU, US, UN and other are doing nothing to help struggling democratic Georgia to habdle such har dattack..

    There's the world for you.

One more thing, Internet is flooded with Russian medias propaganda a is georgian Government is evil and Saakashvili, the president is a bad man, and all this is done to stop Georgia entering NATO.

  4. To protect Russian citizens in the region.

Georgia moved in to retake South Ossetia, of which it hasn't really been in control of over the past decade. A large number of the Ossetians are Russian citizens. One of the prime responsibilities of a country is to protect its citizens, wherever they may be.
