What do you mean, reason in studying earth science. What grade are you in, that you're studying it? What's the specific problem that you're having with it?

The only reason they have for studying age of rocks in Earth science is to try to support evolution. They make up "proof" for it and try to spread it to everyone. It's fake. Other than that, they have no other reason that they make people study it and the teachers and especially sceintists that know that its fake won't say anything about it being fake if they value their jobs. As for the other stuff in Earth sceince, it's for people that are intrested and there are enough of them that they make people study it in schools.

1. Monetary reasons, besides the fact that it can be interesting. Oil & gas and mining industries need earth sciences. many engineering projects require earth scientists (dams, tunnels, etc...).

2. Safety of the population in general, predicting volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsumanis.

3. Paleontology can be cool, (Dinos). and you can laugh at people who don't believe in evolution, becuase you know they are wrong.
