Reason why some plant species are found in a western region are not found in an eastern region?

say the region is Australia, but i'm also accepting reasons in general.

Btw, all questions i asked are in the branch of ecology, don't know why there is no category as ecology

There's a whacking great big desert between western and eastern Australia.  Get across it is a trial beyond the abilities of many potential migrants.
