I was wondering, what is a reasonable amount of miles on used car that is worthy of being bought? ( a bit of a run on sentence, but who cares ) I am a 14 year old kid that is about to start sving up for a car, and i thought it'd be smart if i upped my knowledge of cars a bit, starting at this. Any other tips to buying cars please tell. Thanks

  1. It's a hard question to answer. It all depends on the car. If I were you I would be looking to spend about 2-3.5 grand on an older honda, toyota, or nissan vehicle (start with civics, corollas, and sentras), with around 120-150k miles on it. Once you think you've found a car, read about it all over the internet, forums, etc. Know about any of the known problems with the particular make/model your looking at. If it's know to have a faulty engine, or transmission, move on. Once you've purchased the car, save up $1k, and keep it around for repairs. Some of these import cars have been known to go for 225k miles without a new engine, so they can be a pretty spectacular value.

  2. it depends on the age of the vehicle...You can have a really old car with 2,000 miles and a new car with 200,00 ..If it was previouly a leased car it may also have more miles...

  3. i used to believe that 50 k was a lot of miles  but to days cars 1999s or newer will all run 200k  plus if they are serviced regularly  do not let the engine over heat and change oil often is all it takes but older cars can have other problems  they may need shocks, struts, brakes, tires and maybe the heater or air won't work the way it should  look very close at an older car but don't just think mileage this could be the least of your worries

  4. Normal wear is 12K-15K miles per year.

Heavy wear is 20K or more per year.

That is the industry standard.  But in reality, modern cars are very well made.  So the maintenance has much more to do with condition of the car, then just year and mileage.  My 94 Civic has 187K miles.  But the car is rock solid and it runs like NEW.

    Good Luck...
