I just spent a week in Rome and unless you have a real need to stay by the Termini, I would recommend being closer to Largo Argentina.  The area around the Termini is a little shaky at night and you get to more places in Rome on a bus than on a train or the underground in Rome.  Largo Argentina (near Pantheon and Piazza Navona) is a hub for several bus routes and a quick direct bus ride away from Termini.

If you are on a tight budget, then the Termini is the cheapest place to stay in Rome.  Finding a decent place to stay for less than $75/night is a challenge.

Also, if you plan to stay for a week or more, think about renting an apartment.  You can get weekly or monthly rentals much cheaper than a hotel with a lot more room.

You should avoid the station area coz it's quite unsafe at night. As well, i don't know about prices in Rome but i can link you a directory where you may find what you are lookin' for, This directory include the most of Italy B&Bs divided per regions, provinces, and cities.

Try www.hostelworld.com. They list reasonably priced hostel rooms as well as private hotel rooms with private bath. Most hotels and hostels list their distance from the train station. Good luck!
