I want to apply to a school that is the only school which offers a degree in massage therapy. and like any other school it has requirements. Like a really long essay stating why i chose a career in massage therapy and what career gaols I have. "helping people" sounds so cheesy and hardly even a reason. Help?

  1. As the best thing of life is when you will help other. And Massage Therapy is the career where you will earn money as well social benefit of other.

  2. Helping others is usually the reason people come to careers in massage.  It is also the same reason people usually burn out and leave the profession.

After 20 years in the profession I think it is more about helping myself and taking care of myself.

Having a career that is more meaningful is part of it.  Because of all of the issues that come up around touch, using touch to learn to become more aware of one's feelings, emotional needs and wants is also a big part of it.

We often try to do for others what we really need for ourselves.

  3. write about how massage therapy sparked an interest in you long ago and the more research you did on the profession the more interested you became.  Also, write that you have a huge interest in anatomy and that you have a passion for learning more about how the body functions and want to apply that with your interest in the healing of therapeutic massage.

Massage therapist spend a lot of time in a dark room all day with relaxing music and there really isn't much talking.  So to be a massage therapist, you must have patience and you must be relaxed and focused on what you are feeling with your hands for a long time to do a great job.  You may want to add in your essay that you feel this career suits your personality.  Also throw in that you feel like you have a natural talent and your sense of touch is exceptional.

    Now....

I will tell you this also (don't write this part).

I have been a massage therapist for 6 years now.  It has been great and I feel I have advanced in this career as far as I am going to advance unless I open my own spa and hope it succeeds.  (Which I am not going to do).  It is a very phyiscal job and can be draining to have so much physical contact with people so often.  You will probably not want to touch people much on your own time. In order to be successful and make a lot of money you have to work a lot.  I do about 6 massages a day at a very busy spa and I also do 1 - 3 house calls per week with my own table.  Being as busy as I am, I am making about 50-60k a year.  But that's working my tail off.  So if you like it, do it for a while but people usually get burned out on it after 5 years and start thinking about college again.  I am able to put myself through college and live on my own in this field.  Good luck.

  4. I start massage school MOnday.  And when they asked me I said I want to help people.  You can help their posture, help them coping with pain if they have a disease, or get rid of pain from and injury. To help people relaex and get rid of stress to help them enjoy life and be in a better mood.
