Reasons for lying about cancer?

For around 4/5 months someone i know lied to some people that he had cancer and didn't have long to live, which I was gullible enough to believe, and used this as a base to construct more lies, such as self harm, feeling suicidal...Eventually though, he admitted he had been lying when he was confronted about it.

Although attention seeking was probably a major reason for this, this person is g*y, which doesn't bothered me, but could he have felt isolated because of his sexuality and make up those lies because of that?

this person is rude. and needs to grow a pair. because anyone who lies about cancer for attention is a complete ****. because there are people out their with real cancer, who im sure would gladlyyy give it to him if he wants it so bad.
