i cannot get my father to watch his new 37 inch lcd hdtv in widescreen no matter what I do! ive already tried telling him about how hes bought the tv for 700 some, yet hes barely using half of it! does anyone know what i can do to convince him? its driving me crazy! everytime i go to use it, its back on 4:3, and i need to switch it to wide each time...im really getting tired of it. any advice of what i can tell him to change his mind on it? he says the people look funny in widescreen. honestly, they look exactly the same...

  1. I don't think there is much you can do.  You know older people get set in their ways and don't like change no matter how good it is.

One suggestion, does he like sports?  I know a lot of sports is broadcast natively in wide screen format. - Golf, baseball, basketball, football, even NASCAR.  If you can get him to see how good sports looks in wide screen you might get him to change his mind.

However if you are just stretching out 4:3 programming to wide screen he might not like the way people look.  I know I don't.  What I might do if I am watching letterboxed 4:3 programming I will zoom the picture to fill the screen.

In the end though, it is his tv, let him be happy and watch it the way he wants to.

  2. You get to see more of the picture, usually better quality. Show him side by side of how much picture is exposed in widescreen...and also tell him if he doesn't use this feature he wasted 700 dollars, lol.

Show his this image of the difference.

  3. It sounds like everyone is confused  a little.  Let put down what it sounds like I'm hearing.  Widescreen is a format in which the television is recorded.  It sounds like your dad is pressing the aspect button which stretches a picture to fit the sides.  This will distort the picture, and I don't think he understands what you were talking about.  Yes, widescreen is better and you can view more.  Here is a link with some videos that you can show your dad to convince him on widescreen.

It's really simple to understand and explains it really well.  I hope this helps.
