Reasons why Memphis Grizzlies shouldn’t let Marc Gasol go in the next NBA season (Part 2)
Important component of the line-up
The true value of Marc Gasol can be judged from the fact that in the absence of key player Rudy g*y, who had to down after he injured his elbow during last season, the 7 ft 1in centre make the best use of the opportunity and didn’t just shot well from the field (57.3 percent) in March and (54.5 percent) in April, but also punched points at an average of 11.7 points per game during the previous season.
Gasol’s streak didn’t just end there. When the team moved into the 2011 playoffs, Gasol started tallying points with an even better average of 15.0 points per game. Additionally, the Spanish big also clutched boards at an excellent average of 11.2 rebounds per game.
It was because his sheer brilliance that the Grizzlies were able to make a deep run into the playoffs, in which they stunned the mighty San Antonio Spurs in the first round and then took the Oklahoma City Thunder right to the brink, before bowing out in game-7 of the Western Conference Semifinals.
Marc Gasol is the best available option in this price
In case if the Marc departs, the Grizzlies would look for his replacement in the free agency. However, as far as the free agency is concerned there is deficiency of quality centre and the ones that are good have a huge price tag attached.
Tyson Chandler, the current NBA champion from Dallas Mavericks is also among the list of the free agents, but the owner of the franchise Mark Cuban has said that he is ready to spend big money to re-sign him. Even if Cuban fails in doing so, there will be many big spenders who will go after him.
As far as the other choices are concerned, there will be Joel Przybilla and Jeff Foster available, but the two players are beyond Memphis buying range. Foster’s previous contract was worth $6.7 million and Przybilla was earning $7.4 million. It is obvious that in the free agency, both players will demand more from their suitors.
Then there is Nene Hilario, who has vowed to be part of a championship contender and also wants to earn big bucks.
The major problem for the Grizzlies is that they are already engaged in some heavy re-signings -they have committed a four year pact with key player Zach Randolph worth $ 80 million and have also re-signed Rudy g*y.
So it wouldn’t be possible for the owner Michael Heisley to spend an excessive amount to acquire a solid centre in place of Marc. The best option therefore for the Grizzlies at this stage is none other than Marc.
