Being a stock broker is like many sales jobs.  You have to be comfortable with people and trying to get them to buy into your advice.  Many of the big brokerage firms have training programs in which you learn about the market and the rules for selling investment products.  After a period, you take certain licensing tests, like the Series 7 exam.  Then you have to get clients.  Many brokers make you "cold call" people, meaning that you call from a phone book and try to convince them to open a brokerage account.

With the advent of the internet and firms like Etrade, Scottrade etc., many people are no longer in need of stock brokers to assist them with their investments.  A new profession, called financial planners, has risen to take its place.  Financial planners take the same tests as stock brokers, but they also sell the different kinds of insurance and help individuals out with their total financial plan, including loans, education savings, healthcare.  But they are still salesman and earn a living by selling different products to individuals.

If you enjoying working with people and explaining financial concepts to them, then you should pursue this career.  With all of the publications and news shows on finances, people still are uneducated in this area.
