Question:

Rebate tax check and SSI?

My parents get SSI as their income and are not required to fill out form 1040. They were told by IRS that they will not get any $300 rebate tax checks. They are not eligible. But a lot of their friends filled out form 1040 ( probably because someone told them about refund) and they are getting paid. What should they do?

  1. SSI recipients are excluded from stimilus payments

  2. If what they are getting is really SSI, and they don't have other income, then they aren't eligible.  If what they really get is social security retirement or disability benefits, that IS eligible income and they should file a form 1040a showing the ss amount on line14a.

SSI and social security are two very different programs.

  3. they are on ssi so they havent put in any taxes which is why they are not elegible for a tax refund

  4. I would think that probably their friends do not get only SSI.  There is some confusion about SSI and regular Social Security Disability.  I talked to someone Friday who did not realize that you could get disability that is not SSI.  If your parent are receiving regular Social Security or regular disablity then they would qualify for the stimulus rebate.  If they only get SSI then they do not qualify.  If their friends only get SSI then they falsified tax documents and could get in trouble.
