Rebecca Adlington and Jemma Lowe dominate Women’s events - British Gas ASA National Championships
Rebecca Adlington and Jemma Lowe dominated the preliminary rounds of the Women’s events on the final day of the 2011 British Gas ASA National Championships.
The session conducted the Women’s 400m freestyle, 200m butterfly, 400m Individual Medley (IM) and the Men’s 50m butterfly events in the open class categories.
The session initiated with the Women’s 400m freestyle, where the two-time 2008 Beijing Olympic Champion, Rebecca Adlington, displayed a terrific swim of 4:13.84 minutes to earn the fastest qualification spot. Adlington, who had
already confirmed her spot in the British team to the 2011 World Championships, is now one-step closer from defending her national title of the 400m event.
Nova Centurion’s Adlington was followed by Hannah Miley of Garioch, who appeared as the second fastest swimmer on the wall, by posting an effort of 4:14.29 minutes. They were followed by Eleanor Faulkner of Sheffield, who transpired
as the third fastest swimmer, after completing her swim in a time of 4:15.77 minutes.
The second event of the session was the 200m freestyle heats, where the arena’s favourite, Jemma Lowe, claimed the fastest qualification spot with an undisputed effort of 2:08.42 minutes. She was followed by Elena Sheridan of Romford
Town and Amanda Nugent of Co Salford, who completed their swims in second and third fastest timings of 2:13.12 and 2:14.50 minutes, respectively. Grace Archer and Kirsty Armstrong completed their swims in the fourth and fifth fastest spots, by touching the
wall in a time of 2:15.66 and 2:16.21 minutes, respectively.
The third event of the session was the Women’s 400m IM prelims, where Garioch’s Hannah Miley overwhelmed her fellow swimmers with a considerable distance. Miley was in a lead of almost nine seconds from her following swimmer, Anne
Bochmann. She touched the wall in a fastest time of 4 minutes and 41.57 seconds, when compared to Bochmann’s 4 minutes and 50.94 seconds effort. Lucy Spencer of Sheffield stayed almost one second behind Bochmann and clocked in a time of 4 minutes and 51.45
seconds for the third fastest spot.
The final event was the Men’s 50m butterfly heats, where Oxford University’s Jack Marriott occupied the top qualification spot of the event, with an irresistible effort of 24.63 seconds. Andrew Mayor of Co Newcastle and Nico Meyer
of Tuks RSA followed Marriott in the final as the second and third fastest swimmers, with timings of 24.74 and 24.79 seconds, respectively.
The gold medal winners of these events will qualify in the British team to compete at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, this July.
