Rebecca Adlington pockets Women’s 200m freestyle title - Scottish National Swimming Championships
Rebecca Adlington of Nova Centurion pocketed the gold medal of the Women’s 200m freestyle on the opening day of the 2011 Scottish Gas National Swimming Open Championships.
Nova Centurion’s Adlington, who is the double gold medallist at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in the events of 400m and 800m freestyle, won the gold medal of the 200m event, by touching the wall in a time of 1 minute and 59.34 seconds. She was the only
one to post a sub-two minutes effort in the four-lap swim. Adlington was followed by Hannah Miley of Garioch, who stayed 1.58 seconds behind her and touched the finishing wall for the silver medal, in a time of 2 minutes and 00.82 seconds. Miley was almost
1.50 seconds faster than her following rival and Adlington’s team-member, Sasha Matthews, who touched the wall for bronze medal, by posting a wonderful time of 2 minutes and 02.12 seconds.
Adlington was almost three seconds slower than the senior mark of 1 minute and 56.97 seconds, set by Caitlin McClatchey in 2008, whereas, her effort was slightly under the junior record of 1 minute and 59.98 seconds, made by Lucy Ellis in 2009.
Mireia Belmonte of Spain was the fourth fastest swimmer of the 200m freestyle, as she stayed only 0.01 seconds behind the third position holder and clocked in a time of 2 minutes and 02.13 seconds. Claire Dawson of Stirling Swim followed Belmonte on the
finishing wall as the fifth fastest swimmer and concluded her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 02.43 seconds.
Lucy Ellis of Stirling Swim and Maria Fuster of Spain appeared on the finishing wall as the sixth and seventh fastest swimmers, as they touched the finishing wall in a time of 2:02.82 and 2:03.62 minutes, respectively. The eighth spot was secured by Emily
Jones of Garioch, who produced a time of 2 minutes and 03.97 seconds.
Adlington was happy with her title winning effort and asserted that she will defend her titles at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, this July.
