Rebecca Adlington reaches 800m freestyle semi-final at British Gas Swimming Championships 2011
Two-time Olympic Champion Rebecca Adlington dominated the women’s 800 m freestyle swimming competition on day six of the British Gas Swimming Championships 2011 at the Manchester Aquatics Centre on Wednesday.
She had previously won the 200 m and 400 m freestyle competition at the championships and has now succeeded in securing her third gold medal at the event. Adlington qualified as the fastest swimmer for the 800 m freestyle semi-finals in 8:35.99.
Meanwhile, Jazmin Carlin conquered her heat in a time of 8:38.15, to progress to the semi-finals. Carlin gave Adlington a tough fight in the previous two freestyle races, where she finished only a second off the pace. She will be looking to continue her
impressive performance in the semi-finals of the 800 m freestyle competition.
Open Water Olympic winners, Keri Anne Payne and Cassandra Patten also qualified for the semi-finals in a time of 8:39.50 and 8:37.69 respectively. They will also be looking to snap up the title since they face trials for the Open Water World Championship
in May. This British Swimming Championship will be the first step in their qualification for the 2012 London Olympics.
On the men’s side, 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Antony James qualified for tonight’s 100 m butterfly semi-finals as the fastest swimmer with a time of 54.87 seconds. He was followed by Andrew Mayor and James Doolan in second and third
place respectively with times of 54.94 and 55.22. Last year’s champion Michael Rock finished in eighth position in a time of 55.64.
Moreover, Adam Brown reached the semi-final of the 50 m freestyle with a fastest time of 22.64 seconds. He won the 100 m freestyle crown last night. Brown finished ahead of Owen Morgan and Simon Burnett in 22.99 and 23.01 respectively.
European Junior National Champion Karley Mann also qualified for the women’s 200 m backstroke semi-finals as the fastest swimmer with a time of 2:13.50. She finished ahead of Lizzie Simmonds and Gemma Spofforth with 2:15.97 and 2:15.64 respectively.
Rachael Kelly recorded a time of 27.79 seconds compared to Sian Harkin and Lucy Worrall’s 27.94 and 28.09 respectively to qualify as the fastest swimmer for the women’s 50 m butterfly semi-finals.
