Rebecca Adlington triumphs in Women’s 400m freestyle event - British Gas ASA National Championships
The 2008 Beijing double gold medallist, Rebecca Adlington, demonstrated her expertise in the open class category of the Women’s 400m freestyle, on the final day of the 2011 British Gas ASA National Championships, in Sheffield.
The British Nationals is the second World Selection Trials of local swimmers, who desire to represent their country at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, this July. In addition, British Swimming will choose all those swimmers who will reach the top
of the podium in their respective events, in the national team to China.
Adlington of Nova Centurion dominated the Women’s 400m event with an immaculate swim of 4 minutes and 08.32 seconds. She was 2.57 seconds faster than her subsequent swimmer, Eleanor Faulkner of Sheffield, who scored the silver medal of the event by touching
the wall in a time of 4 minutes and 10.89 seconds. The third spot on the podium was secured by Hayley Towner of Bath University, who was almost four seconds behind Faulkner and touched the wall for the bronze medal in a time of 4 minutes and 14.11 seconds.
Towner was only 0.27 seconds ahead of Faulkner’s team-member, Rebecca Turner, who earned the fourth fastest spot on the podium by registering a time of 4 minutes and 14.38 seconds. The fifth fastest spot was obtained by Charlotte Woolliscroft of Stockport,
who ended her swim in an impressive time of 4 minutes and 16.90 seconds.
Aisha Thornton of Loughborough University stayed almost two seconds away from Woolliscroft and settled on the finishing wall for sixth position, by posting a time of 4 minutes and 18.20 seconds. Lucy Charles of Hatfield and Anne Bochmann of Leeds were the
last swimmers to complete their swims, as they clocked a time of 4:19.42 and 4:20.33 minutes for the seventh and eighth fastest spots.
The championships concluded after the final session, whereas, the crowd appreciated the impressive swims of their local swimmers, who swam against each other with an aim to represent their country at the world stage in China, during July.
