Rebecca Adlington wins Women’s 800m freestyle heats: Day six – 2011 FINA World Championships
Rebecca Adlington of Great Britain demonstrated her astonishing efforts in the preliminary rounds of the Women’s 800m freestyle meet, on day six of the 2011 Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) organised World Championships on Friday, July 29, in
Shanghai, China.
Adlington posted a miraculous effort of 8 minutes and 22.27 seconds in the qualifying rounds to enter the final as the fastest swimmer. Her time was nearly eight seconds away from her own world record of 8 minutes and 14.10 seconds, made by Adlington at
the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Her time was also 6.35 seconds behind the championships record of 8 minutes and 15.92 seconds, set by Lotte Friis of Denmark at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
The British swimmer was followed by championships record holder, 22-year-old Friis, who qualified as the second fastest swimmer into the final round, by reporting in a time of 8 minutes and 23.07 seconds. Friis was trailed by her closest competitor, Chloe
Sutton of USA, who secured third fastest spot into the final round, by submitting a time of 8 minutes and 27.72 seconds.
The fourth fastest spot of the swim was obtained by Sutton’s team-member, Kate Ziegler, who completed her swim behind her and posted a time of 8 minutes and 28.28 seconds. Katie Goldman of Australia remained prominent for the fifth best qualification spot
of the swim, as she stayed only 0.07 seconds behind Ziegler and clocked a time of 8 minutes and 28.35 seconds.
Goldman was followed by Boglarka Kapas of Hungary, who remained 0.05 seconds behind her foregoing competitor and ended her swim in a time of 8 minutes and 28.40 seconds. Lauren Boyle of New Zealand and Wendy Trott of South Africa surfaced as the seventh
and eight fastest swimmers into the final rounds, as they posted timings of 8:28.50 and 8:28.75 minutes, respectively.
The session concluded after the completion of all scheduled events, while these competitors will face each other in the final round, after which the winners will be awarded with medals and accolades.
