Rebecca Artis grabs the first-round lead at Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open
Australian Rebecca Artis shot a 64 in the opening round of the Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open to grab an early lead.
The tournament, being played at Golf Gerre Losone, Switzerland, is featuring a fearsome field. However, the Aussie star displayed the best performance of her career, keeping rivals at a distance.
Posting a career-low 64 in the first round has put Artis in a stronger position, and she is confident to maintain her lead in the next rounds.
The leader kicked off the round in an impressive style, as she shot 8 birdies, one eagle and two bogeys. She fired her first birdie on the difficult par-3 2nd hole. On the 4th, Artis faltered a little and recorded a bogey.
The weather conditions remained favourable throughout the day, giving players enough room to make calculated strokes.
On the front nine, Artis was standing at a stunning 33. She displayed an even better game on the back nine, as she avoided making any bogey. The rising star stunned the spectators when she scored a series of birdies and an eagle.
She drained her fifth birdie on the 13th. Although other contenders tried to edge past her, the Aussie prodigy stood her ground by scoring well.
She received a massive round of applause when she recorded an eagle and three straight birdies on the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th hole respectively.
Speaking to the media about her performance in the first round, Artis said that she has been seeking to sore well in tournaments, and Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open proved lucky for her.
She said that she displayed the best performance, despite the strong field featuring top-ranked LET (Ladies European Tour) stars.
The Aussie golfer went on to say that she focused on staying solid right from the start, and this is what helped her grab the lead on the leaderboard.
Mentioning her performance on the back nine, she said that shooting a series of birdies paid off. “I just played really solid out there. I played solid the front nine and then knocked a few in close on the back nine and got the putter going”.
