Rebecca Marino dumps Aleksandra Wozniak to clinch a quarter-final spot – Bell Challenge 2011
World number 50, Rebecca Marino of Canada, outplayed her fellow compatriot, Aleksandra Wozniak, in the second round of the Bell Challenge in Quebec, Canada, on Wednesday night.
The exciting three-setter took one hour and forty nine minutes to conclude in the favour of the fourth, seeded Marino, with the final scores of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, to send her into the quarter-final draws of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) event.
Getting a wildcard in the tournament, Wozniak put up a decent resistance to the belligerent fourth seed fellow compatriot but couldn’t convert most of her opportunities in the game to finish on the losing side. Marino took hold of the contest early by taking the opener but let the other Canadian back in business by dropping the second set. The fourth seed eventually took the final set to conclude a convincing victory in the end, moving into the round of eight of the Bell Challenge.
It was the 23rd victory for Marino in the running WTA season and the first one against Wozniak in singles encounters. She fired 11 thudding aces in the matchup and coughed five double faults while serving with 58 per cent precision.
50th ranked Marino drew first blood by nailing a serve break in the sixth game of the opener to lead 5-2. Wozniak backfired a couple of games later to reduce the deficit but a second break point conversion from the fourth seed wrapped up the first set at 6-4.
The Canadian played more aggressively in the following set and held serve in all of her games to move neck-to-neck with her opponent. Wozniak cracked in a vital serve break in the ninth game to clinch the second set at 6-4, levelling the matchup at one-all. She lost her winning impetus in the final set, as the fourth seed Canadian stung two crushing break point conversions to race away to victory at 6-4, getting through to the quarter-final round of Bell Challenge.
Marino will take on the unseeded Dutch competitor, Michaella Krajicek, in the next matchup for a place in the semis.
