Rebecca Marino tramples Coco Vandeweghe in the 1st round – Bank of the West Classic 2011
Canadian, Rebecca Marino, defeated the American, Coco Vandeweghe, in the first round of the Bank of the West Classic Tournament 2011 at the Taube Family Tennis Center Stanford University, California. It was a close match between
both the players however, the Canuck, Marino won the match in seventy three minutes and forty four seconds 6-4, 6-4.
Meeting for the first time; both the players battled it out on the outdoor hard courts of the Taube Family Tennis Center. Marino won the toss and opened the set with an ace, on her serve she played four ground strokes that landed
right at the edge of the court and made it difficult for her opponent to return the ball. Due to lack of precision she struck four unforced errors while her opponent Coco had a fabulous serve and return serve however she was unable to save her break points
which cost the set.
The Canadian’s defence did not falter and she did not allow her opponent a single break point opportunity along with capitalizing on her opponents break points. Although the match was very close between both the players Marino
won the set with a single point more than her opponents.
The second set did not see much of a change in both the player’s performance; they both had an exceptional serve however, Coco was able to hit fifty nine percent of her serves on target where as Marino was able to hit fifty three
percent serves on target during the second set. The points of both the players were almost shoulder to shoulder however, Marino won the match because she did not allow her opponent a break point opportunity instead capitalized on the only one break point opportunity
she faced.
Concluding; although both the players were extremely competitive, Marino won as a result of her being able to convert Coco’s break points to her advantage and because of a strong defence she did not allow her opponent any break
point chances. She won with sixty eight percent of her total serve points, along with a thirty four percent of her total return points and had an average total win of fifty three percent.
This year, the 20-year-old Canuck has won 21 matches out of the thirty six she played. She also reached her career high ranking of number 38 this year on the 11th of July. Her most notable match was with the world number
6 Schiavone in the second round of the Australian Open which she lost.
