Rebecca Meyers clinches Women’s 200m freestyle title - 2011 World Deaf Swimming Championships
Rebecca Meyers of United States clinched the title of Women’s 200m freestyle meet on the initial day of the 3rd World Deaf Swimming Championships on Sunday, August 7, in Coimbra, Portugal.
The 17-year-old Meyers acquired the title of the event in a marvellous time of 2 minutes and 11.83 seconds. Her time was 4.70 seconds away from the Deaf World Record of 2 minutes and 07.13 seconds, set by He Yue Yue of China in Taipei in 2009. Her time was
also 2.32 seconds slower than the Deaf Championship Record of 2 minutes and 09.51 seconds, made by Ganna Lytvynenko of Ukraine in 2007.
The gold medallist managed a lead of 0.29 seconds over her following swimmer, Luiza Marushkina of Russia, who reached the podium for silver medal, by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 12.12 seconds. She was trailed by Hannah Fitton of Great Britain, who
stayed just 1.08 seconds behind the silver medallist and stepped on the podium for bronze medal, with a timing 2 minutes and 13.30 seconds.
Meanwhile, Teneale Houghton of Australia was the fourth finest swimmer of the event, as she transpired on the concluding wall, by reporting in a time of 2 minutes and 13.68 seconds. She was followed by Valeriia Stynikova of Ukraine, who was 1.18 seconds
slower than her former swimmer and earned fifth best spot of the swim, with a timing of 2 minutes and 14.86 seconds.
Maryia Rudzko of Belarus was the sixth fastest swimmer of the four-lap race, as she posted a time of 2 minutes and 16.36 seconds. Meyers’s team-member, Peggy Liang remained only 0.11 seconds away from Rudzko and surfaced as the seventh best swimmer, with
a timing of 2 minutes and 16.47 seconds. Peggy De Villiers of South Africa was the final swimmer to conclude her swim, as she clocked a time of 2 minutes and 17.54 seconds.
Furthermore, the winners were awarded medals after the session, while the championship will continue for six more days to complete all swimming events.
