Rebecca Pegg and Andrew Cameron clinch gold medals: 2011 Australian University Games – Recap
Australian stars, Rebecca Pegg and Andrew Cameron sent an alarming message to their superior swimmers by occupying the title of 400m freestyle in Women’s and Men’s category on day two of the 2011 Australian University Games.
The session ended on September 28, at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, in Queensland.
University of Queensland’s Pegg qualified as the second fastest swimmer into the final of 400m event. Her smothering effort in the qualifying rounds aroused the expectations of spectators and the 18-year-old Pegg became the centre of attention for everyone.
In the final of 400m swim, Pegg gained a marginal lead over her competitors in the start of the race. The teenager adopted a magnificent strategy of coupling long strokes with her powerful tumble turns, where the tumbles played a vital role in earning her
a competitive edge and she kept on enhancing her lead at every turn of the race.
The last two laps of the race were very astonishing as she accelerated her swim and ended the eight-lap event with wonderful timing of 4 minutes and 30.94 seconds.
She was followed by University of Melbourne’s Nicolette Lyttle, who stayed almost six behind Pegg and surfaced on the finishing end with a timing of 4 minutes and 30.94 seconds for silver medal.
Lyttle struggled hard to reach the gold medallist but the strength of her arms were weak as compared to Pegg and thus, she remained prominently away from her, posting a time of 4 minutes and 36.09 seconds for silver medal.
In addition, the silver medallist confronted a head-to-head battle with her subsequent swimmer and team-member, Jessica Morrison, who pounced on her shoulder in the final-lap. Nevertheless, Morrison was edged out by Lyttle on the finishing wall, as she remained
0.10 seconds away from her, producing an effort of 4 minutes and 36.19 seconds for second position.
In the meantime, University of Melbourne’s Cameron captured the title of similar event in Men’s category. The 21-year-old Cameron went on a rampage and seized the title of Men’s freestyle discipline by submitting a time of 4 minutes and 08.48 seconds.
With his scintillating efforts, Cameron overwhelmed the efforts of the fastest qualifying swimmer, Macquarie University’s Donald Cameron, who ended his sprint in a time of 4 minutes and 09.04 seconds. Cameron Remained 1.82 seconds ahead of his closest competitor,
Mark O’Donnell of Monash University, who secured the victory stand for bronze medal with a timing of 4 minutes and 10.86 seconds.
The gold winning efforts of these Universiade swimmers were highly recognised by the arena, while the champions articulated their desire of continuing the same in future events. Furthermore, the session completed after the conclusion of all scheduled events,
while winners collected their accolades after the session.
