Rebecca Romero opted out of London Olympics 2012
Olympic medalist and the former world champion, Rebecca Jayne Romero, will not be participating in the London Olympics 2012. The British athlete will certainly miss the opportunity to ride on her home turf.
She wished good luck to the British team as she stated that she is not in the best of her shapes and, therefore, not ready to participate in the race.
While announcing her withdrawal from the Olympics, Rebecca stated, "Having suffered several setbacks at crucial points, I believe I'm no longer on a pathway which will see me fulfill my Olympic ambition to win a second gold medal. I'm proud to have contributed to the cycling team's great Olympic triumph in Beijing and, I thank all the amazing people within British Cycling who were central to my success. I wish my current teammates every success in London next year."
Romero’s personal coach, Dan Hunt told Telegraph that it was entirely Rebecca’s decision to walk out of the Olympics. He also mentioned that the cyclist had worked really hard throughout the season and could be a good contender for the race. However, she had a few injuries which might have changed her mind towards the London Olympics.
She is the first British woman to win the Olympic medals in two different sports. Romero won the silver medal for the British rowing team in Athens Olympics 2004. She retired from rowing in 2006 after suffering a permanent back injury.
She, then, joined the British cycling team and took part in the individual pursuit races. She won the gold medal for Britain at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
Rebecca is a famous figure in England and her absence from the London Olympics will certainly disappoint her fans. Her popularity rose during the Beijing Olympics when she appeared in a soft drink television commercial. She was also appointed as the Member of Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2009.
