Rebecca Soni and Eric Shanteau win 100m breast-stroke title - 2011 Charlotte UltraSwim
Trojan Swim Club’s Rebecca Soni and Unattached-ST’s Eric Shanteau have claimed the Women’s and Men’s 100m breast-stroke titles on day two of the 2011 North Carolina Charlotte UltraSwim.
The championship is a four-day competition and the sixth stop of the 2010-11 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series.
Rebecca Soni of USA Swimming displayed her tremendous swimming skills by conquering the title of the Women’s 100m breast-stroke. The 24-year-old Soni clocked a winning time of 1:05.57 minutes to secure the gold medal. Her timing was comfortably under the
2011 World Championships time qualification standard of 1:09.01 minutes.
Soni successfully ousted her team member, Jessica Hard, who touched the wall to win the silver medal by posting a time of 1:05.90 minutes. With their remarkable efforts, these two Trojan Pupils qualified for the USA Swimming Squad to compete at the 2011
World Championships, in Shanghai, this July.
Minnesota-MN’s Jillian Tyler followed them on the podium for the bronze medal in a time of 1:08.20 minutes. She was followed by Tucson Ford Deal’s Amanda Beard and TN Aquatics-SE’s Ma Moravcikova, who appeared fourth and fifth fastest on the wall with a
timing of 1:08.46 ad 1:10.19 minutes, respectively.
After a few minutes, Unattached-ST’s Eric Shanteau dominated the Men’s event by clocking a time of 1:01.49 minutes. His time was almost a second away from his following swimmer and was 0.08 seconds under the World Championships time standard. South Florida-FG’s
Vladi Polyakov and NY Athletic Club’s Mark Gangloff followed him on the podium for the silver and bronze medal, posting a time of 1:02.04 and 1:02.08 minutes, respectively.
Gary Thacker of Virginia Gators and Rob Holderness of Club Seminole-FL finished their swims in fourth and fifth places, clocking a time of 1:03.30 and 1:03.36 minutes, respectively. For the seventh and eighth spot, Jeremy Peter and Elliot Keefer posted a
time of 1:03.73 and 1:03.88 minutes, respectively.
The championship will continue for two more days to complete the Men’s and Women’s swimming events and the swimmers posting a time under the World Championships qualification standard will secure their spots for the all-important competition in Shanghai.
