Rebecca Soni excels in Women’s 200m breaststroke heats: Day five – US Swimming Olympic Trials
Rebecca Soni of TROJCA excelled in the preliminary rounds of the Women’s 200m breaststroke on fifth day of the 2012 US Swimming Olympic Trials in Omaha on Friday, June 29.
The 25-year-old Soni demonstrated her stupendous efforts in the distant breaststroke discipline and proved her eligibility for the top qualification spot in the semi-finals.
With her relentless efforts, she remained two body lengths faster from her following swimmer and hit the finishing end with the timing of 2 minutes and 23.11 seconds.
Her fastest qualification effort was trailed by Micah Lawrence of MAC-NC, who remained 1.84 seconds apart and posted a time of 2 minutes and 24.95 seconds for second position.
Similarly, third finest qualification spot of the race was secured by Andrea Kropp of RTLRCA, who stayed 0.82 seconds behind and entered the semi-finals with an effort of 2 minutes and 25.77 seconds.
Fourth position of the discipline was secured by Laura Sogar of ABF-NE, who stayed half body length apart and tapped the finishing wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 26.23 seconds.
Sogar was trailed by Amanda Beard of FORDAZ, who proved her eligibility for fifth fastest spot of the event by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 27.07 seconds.
Sixth position of the 200m event was secured by Haley Spencer of MINNMN, who was 0.83 seconds behind and cruised her way towards the finishing end with the timing of 2 minutes and 27.90 seconds.
Afterwards, Conor Dwyer of LFSCIL dominated the qualifying rounds of Men’s 200m Individual Medley (IM). Dwyer faced tough battle from Michael Phelps throughout the event and tapped the finishing end with a fastest time of 1 minute and 59.11 seconds.
His fastest qualification struggle remained 0.16 seconds faster from the fourteen-time Olympic champion, Phelps, who finished his swim in second place by posting an effort of 1 minute and 59.27 seconds.
Third best qualifying position of the discipline was secured by Austin Surhoff of NBACMD, who was almost half body length apart and hit the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 59.65 seconds.
Following that, the world record holder of the 200m IM, Ryan Lochte proved his mettle for fourth position of the event as he clocked an effort of 1 minute and 59.92 seconds.
Fifth qualifying position of the discipline was secured by Peter Vanderkaay of OLY-MI, who was 0.09 seconds apart and posted a time of 2 minutes and 00.01 seconds.
Vanderkaay was chased by Jack Brown of UMIZMV, who stayed 1.84 seconds behind and produced an effort of 2 minutes and 01.85 seconds for sixth position.
Soni was overjoyed with her fastest qualifying effort in the discipline and stressed that she will try to excel at the upcoming London Olympic Games.
