Rebecca Soni wins Women’s 100m breast-stroke semi-final: Day two – 2011 FINA World Championships
American swimmer, Rebecca Soni conquered the finest qualification spot in the finals of the Women’s 100m breast-stroke event, as she dominated the semi-finals on second day of the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) organised 2011 World Championships
in Shanghai, on Monday, July 25.
Soni captured the top qualification spot by submitting a phenomenal effort of 1 minute and 04.91 seconds. Her time was just 0.46 seconds slower than the world mark of 1 minute and 04.45 seconds, made by Jessica Hardy of USA in 2009. In addition, Soni failed
to improve her own championship record of 1 minute and 04.84 seconds, which she set at the 2009 Rome World Championships, with a difference of 0.07 seconds.
She was followed by Leisel Jones of Australia, who stayed nearly two seconds behind her and posted a time of 1 minute and 06.66 seconds for the second fastest qualification spot. Liping Ji of China was the third best qualifying swimmer, as she stayed only
0.43 seconds behind Jones and posted a time of 1 minute and 07.09 seconds.
The fourth best qualification spot was secured by Rikke Pedersen of Denmark, who failed to overwhelm Ji’s effort with a difference of only 0.04 seconds and submitted a time of 1 minute and 07.13 seconds. Ji’s team-member, Ye Sun was the fifth fastest swimmer
of the 100m swim, as she clocked a time of 1 minute and 07.25 seconds. Jillian Tyler of Canada was the sixth finest swimmer of the breast-stroke discipline, as she finished her two-lap race in a time of 1 minute and 07.28 seconds. Russia’s Yuliya Efimova grabbed
the seventh best qualification position, by reporting in a time of 1 minute and 07.53 seconds. Moniek Nijhuis of Nederland was the eighth qualifying swimmer, as she stayed only 0.07 seconds behind Efimova and produced a time of 1 minute and 07.60 seconds.
The session concluded after the completion of all swimming events, while these qualifying swimmers will compete with each other in the final rounds to earn a podium finish.
