Rebecca Turner stuns Rebecca Adlington in 200 m freestyle at 2011 British Gas Swimming Championships
The young Rebecca Turner has defeated the Olympic gold medallist, Rebecca Adlington, today in the preliminary rounds of the 200 m freestyle at 2011 British Gas Swimming Championships being held in Manchester Aquatics Centre. Turner has qualified as the fastest
swimmer in the semi-finals after defeating Adlington, who won 400 m freestyle on the first day of the championship.
Adlington has confessed that she was feeling one hundred percent during the 200 m freestyle heat. The 19-year-old Turner, beat Adlington with a lead of 0.35 seconds, touching the wall in 2:00.08 against Adlington’s 2:01.15 followed by Joanne Jackson in the
third place with her 2:01.17.
They were followed by Hannah Miley, Caitlin McClatchey and Jazmin Carlin as the next fastest qualifiers for the 200 m semi-finals on Tuesday. The race is expected to be one of the toughest races at the championship.
"I was feeling very stiff after the 400, it took more out of me than I thought it would but you just have to get involved," said Adlington.
The Olympic champion, finished 400 m freestyle on the first day of the championship with the top early world timings for 2011 and confirmed her ticket for the race in 2011 Shanghai World Championships. But for the 200 m freestyle, she will have to compete
again in the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) National Championships in June.
"It gives you a chance to do the 200 a bit more especially for the 4x200, that's what I want to make the team for," Adlington added.
The 200 m freestyle is considered to be Adlington’s weakest event because she won only a bronze medal at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. She has expressed her desire to overcome her weakness in the World Championships and next year’s London Olympics.
On the other hand, Russell Smith was the fastest swimmer in the men’s 50 m breast-stroke, whereas Scotland’s record breaker, Iain Macmillan, leads the 200 m butterfly heat and Tom Allen was the quickest among all swimmers in the 800 m freestyle.
