Rebecca Woods defeats Coco Ho to reach the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic Semi-finals
Australia’s Rebecca Woods got the better of Hawaii’s Coco Ho in the third Quarter-final of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic that continued at the Dee Why point in Sydney, Australia, on Saturday, April 21.
The crucial win over Ho served to carry Woods into the Semi-finals of the fourth of seventh stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Title Series, while removing Ho from the race for the event title.
The fans expected the battles between the prestigious female surfers to be nothing short of thrilling and that is exactly what they got to witness since the very first heat of the competition. Even though Mother Nature was not being too generous with the
event, the surfers did exceptionally well to adjust their style to the demanding waves on offer.
Ho, the experienced ASP World Tour veteran, was showing a good form at the latest ASP women’s world tour event. Even though she experienced an early disappointment in Round 1, she bounced back strongly in Round 2 and backed it up with a Round 3 success over
the likes of reigning ASP Women’s World Champion Carissa Moore to make her way into the Quarter-finals.
Facing Ho in the third Quarter-final was Woods, the young Australian who had managed to bring an excellent run by America’s Lakey Peterson to an end. The confidence gained through her Round 4 success was bound to play an integral role during her battle with
Ho during their Quarter-final clash.
The battle between the two surfers for the Semi-final spot took off in clean yet challenging two-to-three foot waves, forcing both the surfers to remain on their toes from the very start of the heat.
Ho managed to draw first blood by locking her first business-wave in the opening minutes of the heat to post a 4.00 on the score-board. After a long and desperate hunt, she managed to back it up with a 4.73-point wave, consequently moving to a heat-total
of 8.73 points.
Woods got off to a slow start, taking her time to adapt to the surfing conditions. However, she made a late charge, scoring a 6.33 off her first business-wave and went on to add an additional 5.40 points to her account off her second business-wave, consequently
finishing with a heat-total of 11.73 points. The impressive performance served to earn her a win over Ho, thus bringing her closer to a title shot.
