Rebecca Woods prevails over Sarah Mason to enter Round 3 of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic
Australia’s Rebecca Woods got the better of New Zealand’s Sarah Mason in the sixth heat of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic’s Round 6 that continued to deliver a heavy dose of thrilling action at Dee Why point in Sydney, Australia, on Friday, April
20.
With two consecutive losses, Mason was forced to step out of the contention for the event title while sending Woods into the third round to continue her pursuit of the event title.
The fourth of seven stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Title Series was playing host to the elite ASP 17 female surfers. The intensity and thrill featured in the battles between the immensely talented surfers left
the crowd breathless.
As the second round of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic continued on Friday, the field continued to trim down to keep only the in-form surfers in contention while removing the rest from the contention for the event title.
Woods and Mason came across each other in the sixth heat of Round 2 after failing to claim victory in their respective Round 1 heats that went down in stormy weather conditions and tricky waves. While the weather had improved considerably on Friday, the
clean four-to-six foot waves were nothing close to ideal. Both the girls faced a huge challenge as they carried out their search for big scores, looking to pounce on any scoring opportunity that appeared during the course of their battle.
As the sixth heat kicked-off, Mason charged towards a wave and only managed to collect a 2.50 off it. Woods got off to a modest start as well, going through a series of mediocre scores before eventually locking her first business-wave to post a 3.50 on the
score-board.
As the heat continued, the Australian surfer added an additional 5.50 on the score-board, moving to a heat-total of 9.00 points. Mason needed to get a good score off her second business-wave, but failed to get the desired score despite a determined effort
on her second business-wave in the dying minutes of the heat. Collecting a 5.30 off her second business-wave, the Kiwi surfer finished with a heat-total of 7.80 points, consequently surrendering victory to Woods.
