Rebeka Alekseviciute, Gabija Narvilaite claim spot in quarter-final round – Polish Open Update
Women’s Doubles duo Rebeka Alekseviciute-Gabija Narvilaite of Lithuania stunned Paulina Kaczorowska-Urszula Nowak and marched into the quarter-finals of the Polish Open on August 31, 2012.
Both contenders remained head-to-head for three exhausting sets and finished this second round match with final result of 15-21, 21-17 and 21-16.
However, Rebeka and Gabija tipped the scale in their favour by prevailing in the last two segments of the battle.
In the opening game, the local campaigners relished full benefits of the home ground to confound their opposing team.
The twosome of Paulina and Urszula were a bit sluggish in the beginning but then a couple of productive rallies provided them the required momentum.
Both female shuttlers gathered six valuable points in a row and reached at a commanding position of seven. They did not lose focus and managed to register a mountainous total of 11 before the mid-game break.
After the interval, the Polish duo kept their supporters’ hopes alive by showing consistency in their performance.
They strengthened their grip with a 16-11 margin in the third quarter of the set and then clutched a vital match point with 21-15 score on the board.
Conversely, Paulina and Urszula put up a below par performance in the following game and squandered a golden opportunity of a straight-set win.
On the other hand, the opposing team showed elevated craft and smacked their challengers with a striking knock.
The Lithuanian campaigners made their intentions clear by ruling the court until a respectable figure of 8-5.
At this stage, Rebeka and Gabija blundered which brought them down 9-11 before half time. They kept trailing their competitors until the third quarter of the set but then a few consecutive rallies helped them to reinstate their status.
Paulina and Urszula strived hard to transform their 1-0 lead into a straight-set win but some fatal mistakes forced them to surrender with a 17-21 score.
Third set was also played in the same manner as at first both contenders challenged each other in all departments of game and neither of them could make a notable difference.
However, the story was entirely different in the second half of the set as Rebeka-Gabija stole the limelight with a dazzling knock of 21-16 and setup a quarter-final clash with Kamila Augustyn-Agnieszka Wojtkowska of Poland.
