Rebekkah Brunson, Lindsay Whalen, Liz Cambage: Top WNBA performers from 7th June games
On Tuesday night, Minnesota Lynx outscored the Tulsa Shock 24-8 in the first quarter and walked away with an impressive 75-65 victory in front of 7,713 basketball fans at Target Center, winning two consecutive games of the WNBA
season 2011.
Here is a detailed insight into some of the most outstanding performances from the game:
Rebekkah Brunson knocks down the Shock
Lynx forward Rebekkah Brunson knocked the Shock down by clinching her third straight double-double. The 6-foot-2 Brunson baffled Tulsa throughout the night and finished with a game-high 17 points and 15 rebound, shooting 6-for-9
from the field.
The 29-year-old, only in her second season with the Lynx, is the eighth player in WNBA history to average a double-double over an entire season with 11.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game – a feat she achieved while playing for
Sacramento Monarchs. The Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve praised the sizzling performance of Brunson and said, "She is just relentless. She doesn't know any other way." "Her play is contagious." This was Brunson’s third consecutive double-double.
Lindsay Whalen’s encouraging performance
Guard Lindsay Whalen was the driving force behind the Minnesota Lynx’s flight. Whalen finished with 16 points, four assists, and three rebounds. The player was also perfect from the free throw line, making all 10 of her free-throw
attempts. A three-pointer by guard Andrea Riley got the Shock within nine just before the first half, but a pair of free throw by Whalen helped push the Lynx lead back to 11 points at the halftime.
Monica Wright
Minnesota Guard Monica Wright came off the bench with 10 points, shooting 4-for-9 from the field. The 22-year-old also nailed 1-of-2 free throws to go along with three rebounds.
Liz Cambage’s team-high
Liz Cambage was the only bright factor on the night for the Tulsa Shock. The centre chipped in with 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Cambage scored nine of her points in the final quarter of the game and played a huge role
in cutting the Shock’s deficit to single figures with one minute to go in the game.
Ivory Latta’s 11-point spurt
Ivory Latta also had 11 points and five rebounds for Tulsa. Latta shot 5-for-6 from free throw line and scored five of her points during a 12-4 Tulsa run midway through the fourth quarter.
