we've got a desktop pc and a laptop using internet off the same modem. one wired and the other wireless. a few days ago the wired connection just went. we've checked all the wires, restarted everything, but no luck. so i was hoping to reboot it in the way that i had done once before, which is to restart it from several days ago, when it was working fine. went into F8, selected the function, but nothing happened. i though that was all i did the last time around. am i missing something? help?..

  1. Call your internet provider.

  2. try updatin ur internet drivers and ur wireless drivers too

  3. Do you have zonealarm installed?

if so a recent windows update has cut off the connection, zonealarm have instructions here:

    http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/p...

  4. may be a problem with the router.

Login to your router and check the settings

    DEFAULT to do this is:

    Router address: "http://192.168.0.1"

    DEFAULT SETTINGS ARE:

    DEFAULT Login name is "admin"

Password is blank. Do not type anything here.

    Good luck.

  5. Your question doesn't seem to match your post.  Rebooting XP has nothing to do with this.

If you need to troubleshoot a connection then you need to verify:

    1.  Does the network adaptor work and does it have a valid address?

    2. Does the modem/router talk to the PC and is it capable of getting an address?

    3.  If everything is connected and addressed, then you need to ping someplace to see if the network is working.  So try 'ping www.yahoo.com' if that works your ok.  If it doesn't then try 'ping 4.2.2.1', if that works then you have DNS problems, talk to your Internet Service Provider or Network administrator about DNS problems.

You do not need to reboot your PC for network problems, but your PC may decide to pick up a private address and that could conflict with your settings.    Rebooting the PC is just easier than resetting your network stack.

As for comparing this to what you did before is meaningless, since you didn't explain what you did before and I cannot read minds unfortunately.

  6. System restore

Start - programs - accessories - system tools -system restore
