Rebuild computers for money?

I am fairly good with computers, i was thinking about buying a broken/defective computer and rebuilding it. Then depending on if it was just what i was looking for or not, I would either keep it or sell it. Would this be worth it?

  1. if you have the money to take the chance, sure. I also am obsessed with computers. I don't have the money to waste on trying though. It will definitely give you some experience with working with hardware and configuring the software properly.

  2. Usually any computer you find as junked will be so out of date that it's not really worth it to rebuild. With the price of old PC133 and DDR RAM so high you would limit your earnings right there. Then add an Operating System at close to another $100 and you are already approaching the price of a new cheap computer. And most people want Windows, not free O/S's like Linux or whatever else, because if it breaks they can't find anyone to fix it. Add any new parts as needed (CD, DVD, HDD) and again there goes your profit. Unless you have a huge stock of old computers to pull parts from and then resell those rebuilds for less than $100, No it's not worth it.

  3. If you would be able to determine the problem and it was a cheap/easy fix then I say go for it. If it needed a new motherboard or processor it probably wouldn't be worth it because they aren't cheap and you will sometimes need to buy all new parts.

  4. Yeah i agree with all the above, your probably better building from scratch or from a barebone system, then you can decide to sell or keep.

Unless you build and sell high end machines or in bulk the money usually lies in repairs, but any profit is good profit $$$

  5. As a PC Tech... Yes!  A good choice.  I would definitely do that.  Make sure it has at least a Pentium 4 or equivalent processor.  See if you can find some old compatible ram laying around.
