I just got a fuel pump rebuild kit for my 45 HP Mariner, should I use any type of gasket sealant on it or just gaskets bare against the metal? The body of the pump is smooth, no corrosion or pits.

Thanx

  1. If you ever feel so inclined to use sealant, which you shouldn't in a fuel pump, avoid RTV at all costs in the fuel system. The gas will disolve it and before long chunks will be all jammed up in your carb.

  2. DO NOT use any type of sealant due to the fact it will break down and clog your new pump .......... just be sure to tighten the screws evenly so it will be flush to the surface...

  3. no sealant should be used

  4. I never use sealant on any gasket. Here what I do. Clean any gasket off being careful not to scratch your aluminum. Then I spray with a Carburetor cleaner to remove any oil and dry with a paper towel. Then put together and tighten down slow all around. Do not tighten one s***w too tight and then the next. You want to snug them evenly and then put a tight to them. May do in an X pattern like Lug Nuts on a car. Or, start from center and work out. If it clean and dry of any oil, it will never leak.
