Rebuilding of team: Dallas Stars return to former boss Bob Gainey for advice, help-NHL News
The Dallas Stars have sought services of their former general manager, Bob Gainey, in their rebuilding process, and president and CEO, Jim Lites, has higher hopes that his second stint is going to be more successful.
Gainey had worked with Stars as a head coach in 1990. He was then promoted to the position of the general manager in 1992. He resigned as the coach in 1996 but continued to work as GM until 2002.
Most importantly, he was the GM when they won the Stanley Cup in 1999.
He now joins the team in the capacity of a consultant and the president of the team has hoped to benefit from his experience in rebuilding the side to become consistent winners in future.
Lites said:
"I'm a big fan. We're excited because of what Bob brings to this market, to this team and to the needs we've identified collectively. I just think he is going to be great."
He added:
"His experience and wisdom in this business is second to none, and he'll be an incredible asset as we continue to build our team to championship levels."
Lites said that the management will be seeking his advice on almost all matters of the team.
His role in assessment of the team’s needs at certain positions in the squad will particularly be crucial as he, being a part of the outfit in the past, understands the matters in their perspectives.
According to the president:
"At the end of the day those decisions will be made by Joe, but Joe will enjoy, I think, a deeper, richer voice. And Joe has been real supportive. Joe has good chemistry with Bob."
Lites said that the move of bringing back the official is backed by owner, Tom Gaglardi, which reflects on his seriousness of putting the team back on winning track.
Gainey has also worked in the capacity of a consultant and GM with the Montreal Canadiens from 2003 to 2010.
As reflected in Lites’ statement, it is Gainey’s rich experience that has attracted Stars to bring him in once again.
