Recap: Henlow Derby and Trophy races
A big night of £1000 trophy races at Henlow was capped Thursday night with the £20,000 Primus Telecom Henlow Derby Final. Three rounds of heats narrowed the field down to six for Thursday’s Final.
Primus Telecom Henlow Derby Final
It was Westmead Guru winning the Henlow Derby by 3¼ lengths over Destroy The Camp with a time of 27.52 seconds. Guru got off to an excellent start, and didn’t look back as he cruised to an easy victory in the big money final.
Camp raced from trap six and stayed wide, avoiding the typical bumping that occurs in greyhound racing, but he wasn’t fast enough to keep up with Guru from the outside.
Taking third place was 10-1 long-shot, Westmead Melanie, who beat the 6-4 race favourite, Westmead Osprey, by four lengths.
Fifth went to Zupjack, who missed his break, and last place went to Star Gaze. Gaze bumped into Zubjack on the second bend, causing Gaze to fall, and finish well back of the pack.
Winters Bookmakers Marathon Trophy
Immediately before the Derby Final was the £1000 Winters Bookmakers Marathon Trophy. Taylors Riviera came in as the 1-3 race favourite, and Killishin Masia had odds of 5-2. The rest of the field didn’t have odds better than 10-1, with Join The Maids and
Sophies Vieri both coming in at 16-1.
The long odds may have enticed a few punters, but it was the two favourites that took the top two spots in this race. Killishin Masai got off to a quick enough start to keep ahead of the other racers that were fighting for position. He finished the race
in first place, 5¾ lengths ahead of Riviera, with a time of 55.00.
Riviera had trouble with Penskey John on the seventh bend, but a strong finish earned him second place. Third went to Join The Maids, and John finished just a shoulder behind Maids in fourth.
Matching Amy finished in fifth while Sophies finished very far back in sixth after a terrible start.
Spargonet Consulting Trophy
Trainers, Seamus Cahill and Charlie Lister went head-to-head in the £1000 Spargonet Consulting Trophy race. Racing for Cahill was Raving Black, the 7-4 race favourite, and racing for Lister was Droopys Belletti.
It was another hound entirely leading the race from the traps as 20-1 long-shot, Bubbly Rambo, got off to a great start. Black took the lead from Rambo on the third bend, and won the race over Belletti by four lengths with a time of 33.28.
In third was Ministry Magic. Rambo fell all the way back to fourth place. In fifth was Total Reality, and in last was another 20-1 longshot, Trade Appollo.
