Recap; JB Were Australian Masters
Stuart Appleby stood on the winner’s podium with a trophy in his hands and sweat rolling down his forehead. After a gap of one year, the winner of the Greenbrier Classic rolled up his sleeves to cast a victory at the Victoria Golf
Club. The player smashed a round of six-under to turn the leader board upside down. However, what happened in the four-day session? For the ones who missed the drama packed episodes, here is a recap of the event.
The JB Were Australian Masters kicked off on the 11th of November at the Victoria Golf Club in Melbourne. The event carried a purse of $1.35 million, which was not even half of the appearance fees of Tiger Woods, but
despite this, a massive field took part in it. The sole purpose of the field taking part in the event was to earn the tour card for the next year.
By the end of the first day, Adam Bland and Alistair Presnell had surged into an early lead by scoring 6-under-par.Bland who teed off from the front nine, picked up six birdies, whereas, Presnell teed off from the back and drafted
five birdies and one eagle. However, the winner of the Cellarbrations Victorian PGA Championship (Alistair Presnell) could not keep up with the spark and slipped in the next round.
Meanwhile, the defending champion gave a superb start by drafting 68 and gave an impression that the title was to remain his. However, early impressions misled spectators and Tiger Woods failed to match the same score for the next
two rounds.
The second round changed the picture of the leader board when fog and rain took the charge. All but five players crossed the realms of par: Aaron Townsend, Ashley Hall, Andre Stolz, Adam Bland, Stuart Appleby, and Sergio Garcia.
The lowest score of the day was pulled by Garcia. The Spaniard teed off from the back nine and carved five birdies to yield season’s best score.
Speaking to the press Garcia said, "I'm just trying to shoot the best score I can. Even though it was quite difficult with the conditions, it seemed like we were always making the right decisions. Put that with how I was hitting
the ball ... to be honest with you, that wasn't the lowest score I could have shot."
On the other hand, Tiger Woods could not cope with the weather and lost his magic after scoring four bogeys on the par-71 course When commenting on his game Woods said, “I wasn't quite as sharp with my irons. When the wind blows
this hard, I tend to revert to my old motion. I struggled with that. It was a little more difficult than I thought it would be."
The former world number one continued with his terrible performance on the third day, but controlled the magnitude of damage by finishing the round at par. However, Adam Bland smashed four birdies and surged into an early lead.
He was followed by Daniel Gaunt, who smacked 68 in the third round to grab the second spot on the leader board.
The final day started with a blast. Appleby took his lucky charm out, which had an Applebee made on it. The Aussie picked up three birdies on the front and three on the back to compile a score of 65. Similar scores was attained
by Tiger Woods, but with a hint of two fabulous eagles. The defending champion lost the title, but regained his form. He finished fourth with Daniel Gaunt at third and Adam Bland at second.
Stuart Appleby claimed the second title at the venue of Victoria Golf Club, whereas, Tiger Woods rejoined his confidence.
Thats it for the recap of the JB Were Australian Masters which took place in Melbourne.
