Recap: Manchester City vs. Everton
The last few days have been a rollercoaster ride for Manchester City fans. Carlos Tevez looked almost certain to leave the club in the middle of the season. After much speculation on his future at Eastlands, the striker recently
announced his commitment to the club. But if Carlos Tevez gave Manchester City fans an early Christmas present, David Moyes was certainly the Grinch who stole Christmas. Manchester City came into the match against Everton knowing that a win would take them
to the summit of the Barclays Premier League at this stage of the season for the first time since 1929. However, Everton dashed their hopes of reaching the milestone, winning 1-2 on Monday.
The victory means Everton continues its remarkable record at the Eastlands, having now won their last 4 games at the stadium. The Toffees got off to the best possible start. Just 4 minutes after kickoff, Seamus Coleman’s cross
found http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Leighton-Baines-c21987 made one of his dangerous runs down the wing, combining with Anichebe and
finishing coolly from Tim Cahill’s lay-off. Baines seems to be getting better after every game. The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 full-back has attracted the attention of the German giants Bayern Munich and performances like these justify their 9 million pound bid for the player.
In the second half, Everton concentrated on defending their advantage as City piled on the pressure. The Manchester City players laid siege to Tim Howard’s goal, but they could not find a way past the American. Everton were reduced
to 10 men following Anichebe’s pointless sending-off, giving City fans some hope. Yaya Toure reduced the deficit with his deflected shot; however, it wasn’t enough to inspire a comeback. Everton defended valiantly with 10 men and saw out the rest of the game.
It would have been easy to say that Carlos Tevez’s recent transfer saga has affected Manchester City’s performance. The truth, however, is that Everton were just the better team on the night. The result means that Manchester City remain third in the Barclays
Premier League with 32 points. Manager Roberto http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mancini-c23323 was understandably downbeat, saying,
‘We have missed a big opportunity to go top and I think we are disappointed because we had a lot of chances to score a goal.’
